Bathroom Designs That Last

January 14, 2017

Taking the long view on remodelling project means thinking not just about what you need now, but how your needs will change over time perhaps as you start a family, as your kids get bigger, as your nest empties—and yes, as you get older too. Nowhere is this kind of big-picture

planning so important—or attainable—as the bathroom. Thankfully, five-star hotels have led the way in gorgeous, accessible bathroom design,  so making your bathroom functional for the long haul can also mean creating something that's extremely appealing now. Three smart ideas:

SET YOUR COUNTERTOP HIGH

Why are kitchen countertops 36 inches high but bathroom countertops so often only 32? Because the conventional wisdom is to split the difference between adult and kid heights in bathrooms. But kids grow up quickly and can easily use a stool. Setting the bathroom counters at 36 inches (or as high as 43 inches if your family is tall) will make your bathroom more ergonomic.

MAKE THE TOWEL BARS STURDY

Beefy towel bars fastened to structural supports in the wall (rather than just screwed to the wallboard) look luxurious, won't loosen up over time, and provide brawny support if you ever need a handhold.
